'Alex Hutton makes some history with the Magna Carta Suite' Stephen Graham, Marlbank

2015... The 800 year anniversary of the Magna Carta signing...

Taking inspiration from the countryside around my daily dog walking duties, I’ve composed a whole album of music. The history surrounding Wraysbury and Runnymede runs deep. The ancient woodland of Ankerwycke shelters a 2000 year old Yew tree. Some say 2300 years… When you’re looking up at the branches under which Roman soldiers would have gathered (perhaps to discuss the building of aqueducts) - the first thing you think is ‘ if the tree could talk - what stories it must have…’

The music starts with an homage to the old tree. Enter King John and the Magna Carta (1000 years later) and the Barons who made him sign it (somewhere in this ancient woodland - under the tree perhaps? There’s tension, celebration, bliss, more tension, and some other moods before returning to ‘the tree’ in modern times. This is all captured in the compositions.

I steal from Palestrina, early folk music, Baroque, Classical, and comtemporary idioms. But I think its just a natural progression from my earlier albums. I’ve used some very talented people to help me get this recorded. Apart from the fantastically lyrical bass playing of Yuri Gloubev, and the palette of powerhouse drummer Asaf Sirkis we have some very beautiful guest appearances from Liz Palmer (Baroque flute) and Liesbeth Allart ( Cor Anglias.) We also have multi-instrumentalist/artist Neil Sparkes (Transglobal Underground/Temple of sound) who adds some inspired spoken word to the music.

Recorded at Masterchord Chord Studio London
The album was released on 13 July 2015.
